Music can change the world because it can change people | Bono

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life | Berthold Auerbach

Where words fail, music speaks | Hans Christian Andersen

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music | Aldous Huxley

Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm to life | Plato

Anyone who has held music as an important part of their life doesn’t need quotations to remind them of the extraordinary power of good that can come from music. Music allows imaginations to flow, energy to be harnessed, and expression to be given where thoughts can’t be articulated; it invigorates, refreshes, soothes, astonishes, inspires and energises; it develops collaboration, confidence, focus, and commitment; it can be a means of forming new and close friends; quite simply, it can provide great joy! Despite the best efforts of politicians to squeeze the arts out of mainstream education, and of funding cuts to undermine youth and amateur music scenes as well as threaten the professional cultural life of this country, the story is not all doom and gloom.

I was recently struck by how many extraordinary friends and colleagues I have who are quite literally changing lives with music – and the list grows the further I delve. Organisations and individuals are responding to the need to make music, in all its liberating, aspiration-raising, emotion-channelling glory, available to all. Whether people are being given the chance to sing, play, compose, or listen, any opportunity for more people to engage with music is simply a brilliant thing.

This site, then, is really a chance to draw attention to some of these tireless, talented and generous-spirited people and their projects. It reiterates the importance of fighting the corner of the arts in education, and in our culture at large. It reminds those of us working as professional musicians, easily bogged down in the daily grind of rehearsal schedules, practice routines and travel logistics, what the heart of this amazing art is. And it is a chance to say thank you to all those who are changing lives with The Good of Music.
